From an Old Journal: Lust
I was looking through some old journal entries, and I came across this passage I wrote during a personal retreat once.
With Valentine’s in the air, I share this unsolicited relationship advice. Maybe it’ll help some folks out in their own discernment of the relationships they are in and/or getting into:
It is dangerous to build a relationship around lust.
It is potentially even more perilous to convince yourself that lust is only a sexual issue. No, we lust for companionship, image, security, affirmation, et cetera.
Lust destroys relationships because it treats another as an object needed to satisfy some desire.
The cure? Love.
For love doesn’t count the cost; love doesn’t expect anything in return; love gives without taking.
So, yea, love.
In the words of St. Augustine: “Lust rules where there is no love of God.”
